NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2020 || Nepal

(organized by Nepal Astronomical Society)

Since its inception in 2012, NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge has become the world’s largest global hackathon, engaging thousands of citizens across the globe to use NASA’s open data to build innovative solutions to challenges we face on Earth and in space.

Congratulations to all the Global Award Nominees and Local People’s Choice Awardees

Space Apps inspires local communities to come together, think intensely, and create solutions to important problems. Each year, Space Apps engages thousands of individuals in cities around the world to work with NASA’s open source data in a 48-hour sprint. Teams of technologists, scientists, designers, entrepreneurs, artists, and others collaborate to answer some of the most pressing challenges on Earth and in space.

Nepal started hosting Space Apps Challenge in 2013 and Nepal Astronomical Society (NASO) decided to bring this opportunity closer to you. Hence, we started hosting it in collaboration with different organizations since 2019. In 2019, we hosted two Space Apps Challenges, one in Biratnagar and one in Kathmandu. The initiative was started in close partnership with Innovate Group Nepal (ING) and local collaborators Innovative Ghar Nepal and Madhav Space Agency respectively.

Space Apps 2020 will be coming to you on October 2-4. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and in the interest of our global community’s health and safety, this year’s hackathon will be an all-virtual event. In other words, all local events will be moved online. Our theme for this year’s event — “Take Action” — is a critical reminder that you can make a difference, even from the comfort and safety of home.

What is Space Apps?

Space Apps is an international hackathon for coders, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, technologists, and others in cities around the world, where teams engage with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space.

Space Apps gives you the opportunity to bring projects to life for a wide range of applications. We are looking forward to seeing what innovative, creative ideas you bring to the community this year.

Space Apps is your chance to experience, experiment, and explore solutions to our universe’s biggest challenges!

As the countdown to our ninth year of Space Apps continues, we are increasingly eager to have problem-solvers of all walks of life join us on the journey. Keep an eye out for upcoming information on how you can get involved this year, whether hosting a Space Apps event in your community, rolling up your sleeves and participating, or helping students, professionals, engineers, makers, artists, coders, and storytellers on their intrepid travels into Space Apps.

Why NASO is promoting this International hackathon in Nepal?

Nepal has witnessed this program in 2013 for the first time yet it was mainly organized in Kathmandu Valley only. Since, we work for astronomy and space science, we find it engaging for youths in the country seeking a platform to showcase their innovative approaches to solve different problems related to earth, space and humanity.

Our office has been receiving many requests from people from all corner of Nepal which motivated us to decide to host this challenge all seven provinces of Nepal. Year 2020 will be the first time this program going to different cities of Nepal.
